The regular series starts today and we’re getting back to the basics. Slice and Ale are back. Ale seemed to be a fan favorite so I’m glad to have him back. There was some comments made that it was hard to read what Ale was saying because Kevin and I put a thick Scottish accent on him and it was a little too much. So, when you read Ale put as much of an accent on it as you want, but Ill letter it in a way that people can read it.

Because the regular series starts now I have done some advertising. Ive taken posters down to three local comic companies (Strange Adventures, Quantum Frontier, and Monster Comic Lounge) and all have agreed to put up or consider putting up the poster. I want to thank them… so thank you.

Here we go, the on going Slice comic is now here. No more short stories or Mini-series. Slice is now in his own full blown series. I can feel the excitement in the air. I decided to start off with an advertisement piece that Im going to take to the local comic shops … and if they let me, put it up somewhere.

I would have a page for you to read today, but it took so long to color this that I didnt have time to get to the page, but this does look uber cool.

This is also going to count as the cover of issue 1 aaannd a donation prize. Anyone who donates at least $20 will have this signed and mailed out to you. The piece that comes in the mail wont have the lettering on it just the image.

So get out your paypal account and get donating… please.

The last step is usually figuring out which panel I want to color and then doing it. Two things usually dictate the choice. One, which of the panels do I think will stand out the most colored and two, how much time do I have.

For this page it was down to two options. Panel three or the large back drop of the mom and kid. I thought it would put more emphasize on the kill shot to do number three.

And then lettering is done and presto, you have a Slice of Fate page.

Step 3 is of course inking. The picture above is how I ink a page before scanning it in. I dont get into too much of the black, I save that for computer to do. I use Photoshop to scan the pictures in and then use it again to make borders and to bucket fill any black areas such as panel 3.

from here I decide what panel to color.

At this point I’ll make a few changes… I’ll leave it to you to figure out what I did and didnt change.  I also frame the panels off and just try to give the whole piece a little more structure before put ink to paper.

for shits and giggles I thought I would give you all a step by step showing on this weeks page. Why? I like to ask why not? there is no real reason for it other then I’ve been thinking about doing it and well, this is the week for it.

The one thing you’re missing here is the script. I write the pages out in advance and then edit them a few times. Kevin goes over the Slice stories but I have not shared the Adam story with him.

On this page I do the basic layout. It’s very rough and I dont do much detail, it’s all just so I can look at what I have and then play with it a little before I put to much detail on paper.

With that said I have a favor to ask everyone. IM going to Halifaxs first big budget convention in October and even though I’m not getting a table to promote I do want to do some net work stuff to promote slicefate.com.

I’m asking for any donations that people can spare so that I can get my tickets and produce a slicefate t-shirt that I can wear about. Anything you can spare will be great and I thank you in advance.

Two pages in the same week. Not bad for an old timer. Again, sorry about last week, but you can sleep soundly tonight knowing that all things are back up to date.

So I have to eat some crow here… I’m not a techie sort of guy and so sometimes I’ll denounce new technology with out first experiencing it first hand. I do it all of the time and for everything. I still have not and will not buy one of the new fangled wide screen 90″ HDTV’s because I feel like they (and they know who the are) are trying to format everything to force us to have one of their precious little boxes in every home. To that I say “Ich wil keine Arschlöcher!”

But… and I say this with trepidation… I tried an iPad. Hmmmmm…. I swear it was only a short try and I didnt mean to do it. It was a techie accident. The thing is though I started to see a little bit of the draw. First off, Slicefate.com looks great on the iPad. You can make it so that the new post takes up the full screen as if though you were looking at an actual comic book page. It was nice to look at.

So after I did that, I played some games on itand I started to see the Apple iPad in a new light. It’s not really useless at all. I still say that it’s not needed, but in the same way my PSP is not needed. If anything it’s jsut a big toy that you carry around with you that can allow you to do more things then whatever little time killer you use now.

Example, if I have a day that is filled up with appointments I will take my PSP to kill time with during the waiting around periods, Dr’s offices and such. I will always turn my PSP off at some point because I’ll get bored with the game I’m playing and I wont want to play the back up game I bring with me, so I turn it off and Im left to my own vices.

But something like this opens up a whole new array of time killing possibilities.  Books, games on the fly, movies etc..

Dont get me wrong, I’m still not going to spend that kind of money on something like this, there is no way. But when I used it out of the context I had put it in I realized that it could be fun, but only for lets say $150, but thats me. Im cheap.

I also still say that all those people out there that said “Oh, this is the new shit. This will change the world, this will change how I do business” can eat donkey dick. Because it hasnt and it isn’t and it wont.

I will say that there is fun to be had with it, I dont mind admitting when Im wrong. But as far as I can tell its just something neat to have to kill time on the bus/toilet/waiting room/etc…

So things got really busy last week and I didnt get a chanc eto post. I am sorry. Im not sure how you guys were able to cope with out a Slice comic last week, but you all seemed to survive. You are all very brave people.

However as this page is posted I am currently working on page 19 for thursday so I should see you then.

So here is the thing. When I started off with my “Short story” of Adam. It was really only going to be 10ish pages long. Here I am on page 16. Doesn’t really matter I suppose, but I did want to let you know that things will be wrapping up soon and we’ll be back with some good ole fashion Slice fun.

I did want to take a second to make a point that I didnt feel That I made very clearly on this weeks episode of Verbalbrew. By the time you read this that show should be up and running so I can talk about if I want.

In our discussion we talk about the movie “Inception“. I really liked the movie but I did have one problem with it. The beginning. For me it was far to long and draggy a start and it was nor really necessary. I was trying to make the argument that it basically takes the whole first half of the movie for them to sell the idea to me and they didn’t have to. There was no reason for their “argument” about why I should eat this premise up.  In one way it would have been like watching “Predators” and for half an hour they explain that aliens are real things and that they want to kill us. That wasnt the case. The humans land on their planet and everyone tries to kill each other and great nonsense ensues.

It got me to thinking, what other movies felt the need to explain to me what was going on in their movie and I automatically had “Inglorious Bastards” come to mind. In the beginning of that movie a speech is given to explain why Nazis hate Jews, as if we needed to be told why? BUT the argument is told in such a brilliant way that (and if you dont know what I’m talking about watch the movie) its ok to get this somewhat useless information. Half the brilliance of it is that its told in about 5minutes… not an hour.

That was my issue with “Inception”. It did in about 45 minutes what Inglorious did in about 5.

Thats what i was tring to say during the podcast. That aside, Inception is a really good movie.
